Profile

Professor Martin Misfeld is a Professor of Cardiac Surgery. He attended the Medical School at the University of Hamburg, Germany from 1986 to 1993. He then completed his Residency at the Department of Cardiac and Thoracic Vascular Surgery, University of Luebeck, Germany and obtained his MD degree in 1996. He was Registrar and Research Fellow at Harefield Hospital, UK from 1998 to 1999, and completed his PhD degree at the Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine, University of London in 2004.

He became an Associate Professor at the University of Sydney in 2008. Since 2009 he has been a Senior Consultant, and since 2017 Co-Director, including Leading Senior Consultant, in Aortic Surgery and Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery at the University Clinic of Cardiac Surgery, Leipzig Heart Center, Leipzig, Germany. He is a Visiting Medical Officer, Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney since 2019, and is an Honorary Professor, Medical School, University of Sydney.

Professor Misfeld has more than 300 peer-reviewed papers and 20 book chapters. He is a reviewer for leading cardiovascular journals and a member of national and international societies. He is Associate Editor of "Annals Cardiothoracic Surgery" and on the Editorial Board of the "Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeon".

He performs minimally invasive cardiac surgery, valve preserving techniques, Ross procedure, novel aortic valve substitutes, the complete spectrum of aortic surgery, "anaortic" surgery, complete arterial OPCAB/MIDCAB/MICS-CABG techniques, Maze procedures and complex cases.

Research

Professor Misfeld has previously focused on basic research of aortic root physiology and structural elements. Currently, he is focused on clinical research covering the whole spectrum of adult cardiac surgery including coronary artery bypass surgery, valve surgery, aortic surgery, anticoagulation, new valve substitutes and others topics. Professor Misfeld is the founder of the multicentre CAMPAIGN project - a retrospective and prospective database for patients with infective endocarditis. He is an investigator of more than 30 national and international studies, including the PAPA-Artis International Trial, Compass Study and TiCAB Trials. He has been the Chairman of the Working Group "Aortic Valve Surgery" of the German Society of Thoracic, Cardiac and Vascular Surgery (DGTHG) since 2011, and on the Steering Committee of "The International Aortic Arch Surgery Study Group" (IAASSG). He has more than 30 supervised MD/PhD theses at the University of Luebeck and the University of Leipzig, Germany.
